The Starfield Group, Inc. was offering its ergonomic adjustment software free to K-12 schools in the United States. We were overwhelmed by the number of requests to download this software. We were also surprised at the number of schools who asked if there would be a MAC version. The easiest way to make it available to every student, regardless of computer type or operating system, is to put it on the Internet. Effective April 14, 2000 we have made the software available to everyone. We encourage you to have your students use this software as often as necessary to arrange their computer work areas at school and at home to increase their comfort and minimize the potential for injury. Bookmark the software and use it as often as you need to.

OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has recently released a new proposed standard to cover MSD's or Musculoskeletal Disorders for workers in America. One of the largest causes of these disorders is computer use. Unfortunately, these regulations don't do a thing to educate and protect our children.

The Starfield Group recognizes that it is important that we do not forget the children and young adults who use computers. Every day more and more computers are being made available for school age children. Internet access is being made available at break-neck speeds in the classroom, libraries, and even at home. Children are spending more and more time at the computer to enhance their learning and for recreation.

What is disturbing is that there is little, if any, effort being made to educate the students on how to properly use their computer without damaging their bodies. The companies selling the computers understand this issue but are afraid to tell you about it for fear they will be sued by somebody using their equipment. In addition to the lack of education, children are often using furniture designed for adults. If lack of ergonomic training and education is a serious problem for adults, what about the children whose bodies are still developing?

Grade Level

It is anticipated that average students in grade 5 and higher should be able to use the software without difficulty. The software was created with adults in mind. However, it has been used by students in the 5th grade and has been reviewed by teachers who agree with this educational level. Younger students would also be able to use the ErgoStar with supervision from older students or adults.
